It took five hours to fly from Auckland to Cairns. The journey was bumpy and row F - my row - lost its in flight entertainment. I was 50 minutes in to episode 1, series 2 of 'The Hour' which I hadn't seen, when it cut out. Oh well. For some reason it kept the sky map - which was good enough for me!
On arrival in Cairns I had what turned out to be probably the most ironic thought of my life which went something along the lines of 'ooh lovely small airports, I should always do this - I'll have my baggage in no time'. Well, at least 2 hours later I was still airside and with about 20 other people whose baggage had been lost. Only two flights came in during the hour that we landed - how could this happen?!
So I left the airport dressed in my biggest clothes - jeans and trainers - and carrying two hoodies. This is what happens when you leave London in the middle of winter and you bag is full to capacity. The humidity outside was amazing. I knew the place I'd booked to stay in was a little out of town and my priority was food. Unfortunately having eaten, it then meant a 20 minute walk in said clothing, carrying full hand luggage. I was so sweaty I might as well have been dipped in a swimming pool. It was dripping into my eyes!
I had just left for town to buy some more suitable clothes when a man from a baggage company pulled up. I watched him with anticipation, and my eagle eyes paid off - MY BAG! Apparently it had been in the airport all along. You can imagine I had something to say to Cairns Baggage Handling Services!
